One hundred and eighty-one years of chess in Kidderminster.
Founded at the Swan Hotel in 1845, with recorded games in the town since 1843, Kidderminster Chess Club is one of the oldest chess clubs in the United Kingdom. This is its story.
The First Recorded Games
In December 1843, Berrow’s Worcester Journal reports a correspondence match between the chess clubs of Kidderminster and Wolverhampton, played by post at one or two moves a week. The full moves of both games are printed the following February. They are the club’s first surviving games, and both have now been reconstructed move by move.
The Club is Founded
Kidderminster Chess Club is established at the Swan Hotel, Swan Street. That April, The Era records the club issuing a challenge to the gentlemen of Shrewsbury. The club predates the first international chess tournament in London by six years.
Lords of the Board
Lord Ward, the future Earl of Dudley whose fortune would later restore Worcester Cathedral, donates £5 and enrols as a member. A year later Lord Lyttelton, president of the British Chess Association, becomes the club’s patron.
The Postal Years
A marathon two-year correspondence match against Penzance, nearly three hundred miles away, ends in defeat. Against Nottingham the club then loses a queen, and with it the game, through a clerical error in the post. The perils of chess by Royal Mail.
The President at the Divan
The Era publishes a game played at London’s famous Cigar Divan between G.H.D. Gossip and Mr Zachary, described as President of the Kidderminster Chess Club. The full game survives.
The Cobham Trophy
The club wins the Challenge Trophy donated a year earlier by Lord Cobham, of the same Lyttelton family that gave the club its patron in 1847. Kidderminster’s name is among the first engraved on a trophy still in use over a century later. The club wins it again in 1905.
A Champion Visits
Now headquartered at the Workmen’s Club, the club hosts a sixteen-board simultaneous display by G.E.H. Bellingham of Dudley, who three years later finishes fourth in the very first British Championship.
Between the Wars
Kidderminster are Division Two champions of the county league. The side stays strong into the next decade, beating Bridgnorth 16–4 in 1932.
War and Revival
Competitive chess across Worcestershire stops entirely for the Second World War. In January 1946 the Birmingham Daily Gazette reports the club revived and recruiting once more.
One Hundred Boards
The club hosts Worcestershire against Staffordshire over one hundred boards, one of the largest county matches ever staged in the town. The Mayor of Kidderminster opens play with pawn to queen four.
The Golden Age
The second team, playing as the Kidderminster Bishops, wins Division Two four times. Leslie Blackstock becomes Worcestershire champion in 1966–67 and goes on to play the 1971 British Championship at Blackpool. The peak is 1969–70: league champions and Division Two winners in the same season, a championship double.
Graham Bunn (1944–1991)
Graham Bunn passes away after 40 years of service to the club. A stalwart of Kidderminster chess who played in every match going: league, county, congresses. His death from cancer shocks the club. The Graham Bunn Trophy is established in his memory, awarded annually for the highest number of points in club matches.
A New Home at Habberley
The club moves to the Habberley Social Club, its home for the next 22 years. Within two seasons Kidderminster B lift the county’s Wheatley Cup.
Unbeaten Champions
Kidderminster I win the league championship without losing a single match, seven wins and three draws under captain Maurice Bissell. Bissell also wins the county’s Bennett Cup that year, twelve months after John Wrench won the same trophy.
Jim Friar
Jim Friar passes away. Chief coach and honorary treasurer of Worcestershire Junior Chess Academy, county team captain, and captain at both Hagley and Kidderminster clubs. Generous with his time to younger players throughout his life. Only the year before, he had won the county’s Bennett Cup, his name engraved on the trophy plinth. The Jim Friar Trophy is awarded annually for services to Worcestershire chess.
Pittaway Cup Winners
Kidderminster wins the WDCL Pittaway Cup, beating Wolverhampton 6¼–4 in the final. Kidderminster A gain promotion in the Wolverhampton League. In 2017 John Wrench also becomes the first ever recipient of the county’s Jim Friar Award.
Post-Pandemic Growth
Following Covid-19 and the global popularity of The Queen’s Gambit, the club sees a significant membership surge. President John Wrench begins running four school chess clubs across the Wyre Forest area.
A Record-Breaking Season
Joseph Friar wins seven titles in a single season: the Club Championship, President’s Cup, Lightning, Quick-Play, Handicap, Worcestershire Bennett Cup, and the Worcestershire Individual Championship. The first player in the club’s history to achieve this. With the Bennett Cup, his name joins that of his father Jim, the 2015 winner, on the same trophy plinth.
League Champions
Kidderminster wins the Worcester and District League, Rapidplay League 2, and Dudley Division 3. Cameron Henry, aged 15, becomes the youngest team captain to win a league championship in Worcestershire history.
A New Home
The club moves from the Habberley Social Club (home for 22 years) to the Kidderminster Harriers Social and Supporters Club. On the opening night, 22 members play, including five new faces and several younger players.
